Tove Ditlevsen is today celebrated as one of the most important and unique voices in twentieth-century Danish literature, and The Copenhagen Trilogy (1969–71) is her acknowledged masterpiece. Childhood tells the story of a misfit child’s single-minded determination to become a poet; Youth describes her early experiences of sex, work, and independence. Dependency picks up the story as the narrator embarks on the first of her four marriages and goes on to describe her horrible descent into drug addiction, enabled by her sinister, gaslighting doctor-husband.

Throughout, the narrator grapples with the tension between her vocation as a writer and her competing roles as daughter, wife, mother, and drug addict, and she writes about female experience and identity in a way that feels very fresh and pertinent to today’s discussions around feminism. Ditlevsen’s trilogy is remarkable for its intensity and its immersive depiction of a world of complex female friendships, family and growing up―in this sense, it’s Copenhagen''s answer to Elena Ferrante''s Neapolitan Novels. She can also be seen as a spiritual forerunner of confessional writers like Karl Ove Knausgaard, Annie Ernaux, Rachel Cusk and Deborah Levy. Her trilogy is drawn from her own experiences but reads like the most compelling kind of fiction.

Born in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen in 1917, Ditlevsen became famous for her poetry while still a teenager, and went on to write novels, stories and memoirs before committing suicide in 1976. Having been dismissed by the critical establishment in her lifetime as a working-class, female writer, she is now being rediscovered and championed as one of Denmark''s most important modern authors, with "Tove fever" gripping readers.

About the Author

Tove Ditlevsen was born in 1917 in a working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen. Her first volume of poetry was published when she was in her early twenties and was followed by many more books, including the three volumes of the Copenhagen Trilogy: Childhood (1967), Youth (1967), and Dependency (1971). She died in 1976.

I read this book in two sittings, mesmerized by the life she describes...the culture of poverty, expectations for females, by others and by herself...and her own feelings about writing...all are gripping...sexual attitudes of the time are also revealing...so much infidelity and divorce...and she hardly experiences the German occupation during WW II...but my biggest disappointment is that she never writes about how she grows intellectually, from an almost completely uneducated girl to a lover of literature...and the book never reveals that she committed suicide...from Wikipedia: "Throughout her adult life, Ditlevsen struggled with alcohol and drug abuse, and she was several times admitted to a psychiatric hospital, a recurring theme in her later novels.[8] She died by suicide in 1976 due to an overdose of sleeping pills.[9]"

There is an undisciplined or maybe an inadequate-editing feel. The author is so open and honest about all the shameful things that were done to her in childhood and then throughout her life. When a child is abused as this author was, it nearly always results in a variety of troubles that manifest for extended periods of their life.

It can be disheartening to read of all the ways she sabotages her relationships and her general personal wellbeing. But the narrative eventually does become quite encouraging as the story goes on...so don''t give up too soon.

If you like memoirs, you may love this one. But, I cannot tell a lie-- I read it all-- it was good enough for that-- but I just can''t quite love it.

My ancestors all emigrated from Denmark in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They lived in rural areas, on farms and the like, but I imagine they experienced the sort of bleak circumstances that Ditlevsen describes in the first third if the book.

I also have experienced addiction secondhand, so I found the last third very compelling. The way that addiction turns beautiful human beings into desperate conniving beasts is so unbearably sad. We are fortunate to have the author''s courageous blunt description of her struggles. I am sad to learn that she ultimately succumbed to the disease, but glad she was able to express her creativity along the way. I look forward to reading some of her works of fiction.
