Product Description

The complete Marvel Masterpieces painted trading-card art from the rare 2016 Upper Deck set is collected for the first time, featuring Marvel''s most famous heroes and villains, beautifully illustrated by the incomparable Joe Jusko!

Joe Jusko''s paintings for the 1992 Marvel Masterpieces trading card collection are credited with launching the ''90s trading card boom. In 2016, Upper Deck returned the Masterpieces series to its roots with an all-new set of Jusko cards.

The full set of paintings is collected here, all 132 from the set, including the hard-to-find premium cards. Each piece of art is presented at actual size and has been scanned by the artist to ensure the highest quality reproduction. Each card is accompanied by its preliminary sketch, as well as commentary from the artist himself. Art fans not only get the full magnitude of Joe''s talent, in great detail, but insight into his thought process behind each piece. A must-have not only for Marvel fans, but for fans of fantastic art as well.

And as an incredible bonus, Joe has painted 10 brand-new pieces exclusively for this book!

About the Author

Joe Jusko is one of the best known fantasy, pin-up and comic artists in the world today. His career has spanned over 40 years, starting with the sale of his first cover for Heavy Metal magazine in 1977 at the age of 17. Since graduating that year from NYC''s High School of Art & Design, Joe has worked for almost every major comic publisher, producing hundreds of images for covers and interiors. His work has appeared on paperback book covers, calendars, posters, t-shirts, toy packaging, and countless trading cards, most notably the multi award-winning 1992 Marvel Masterpieces, the popularity of which led to his groundbreaking 1995 Art of Edgar Rice Burroughs trading cards. Those 125 paintings have made him the most prolific Burroughs artist ever.

In addition to his work at Marvel over the years, Joe has produced art for many other companies and characters, including DC Comics, Wildstorm, Top Cow, and Byron Preiss Visuals, to name just a few. He has produced storyboards for ad agencies and advertising campaigns for such clients as the World Wrestling Federation. Joe also produced a fully painted graphic novel based on Lara Croft, the heroine of the Tomb Raider video game series, which won a Certificate of Merit from the Society of Illustrators, into which he was inducted in 2007.

Marvel Characters in 3D and Looking Realistic - The Complete Upper Deck Set and Some Extra Cards Too

This book collects the artwork from the complete 2016 Marvel Masterpieces Upper Deck card set (132 cards) and it also has a few extra card images that did not make it into the card set. The art is very big and very detailed which makes the whole set much more enjoyable. Each card artwork is about 8.5 inches wide and 13 inches tall.

If you like realistic artwork of Marvel characters, you will love this set. If you like Alex Ross style of realistic 3D art, then you will love Joe Jusko’s style. The characters seem to come to life and look plausible especially with the excellent use of shades and contrasts for each card. Joe provides pre production sketches and drawings to show how each card image came about on to his canvass. His very short commentary on each card keeps the book going and the reader interested. There are quite a few of less popular characters on this set and so it helps you learn about other Marvel characters that you may have not seen before.

Joe Jusko became quite famous with his artwork for the 1992 Marvel Masterpieces card set. The Spiderman card in particular is what got me into Joe Jusko card paintings and style. Fortunately I was able to get a bigger image of the 1992 Spiderman card and it looks very awesome. The Spiderman cards from the 2016 set look just as detailed and beautiful and they were good enough to get me to buy this book. Just look at that Spiderman on the cover of the book!

As a collector, I purchased a lot of what they call non-sports cards in the 80''s and 90''s. Not being a sports fan, it was the art that drew me to these sets of cards. One of the best was the Marvel Masterpieces set. I was unaware the Joe Jusko had done another masterpiece set in 2016, and I am sorry to say the set is way beyond my price range now. But this book more than made up for it. Joe''s style has improved beyond the great level it used to be when he did the Tarzan series. Each painting for the card set is in full color and intense detail, and the pages are big enough to let you really enjoy and appreciate the detail of his work. Thank you.

Every single Marvel Masterpiece painting by Joe Jusko is printed as large as the page, from edge to edge. It''s like having a book full of mini posters. You can see every detail of the paintings. It''s one of the best art books I have seen in a very long time. Also included are the sketches for those paintings, which is so great to see how the paintings all began. Go get this book right now!

Joe Jusko''s Marvel Masterpieces book is a wonderful collection of his paintings that are printed large and in beautiful color. Each painting has preliminary sketches and insights as to what Joe was thinking for design and color schemes as well as commentary by Joe as to his likes and critiques of his own work. It is rare to get this kind of feedback from a professional artist and will definitely engage you into his process, the painting and Joe himself. I highly recommend this book for lovers of Marvel art as well as aspiring artists who will get a glimpse of the work that goes into being a professional artist and the pressures that have to be dealt with to create and produce this amount of outstanding art! Face front, true believers...…..Excelsior Joe!!

I''ve been a huge fan of Joe Jusko ever since I first laid eyes on his amazing paintings for the 1992 Marvel Masterpieces card set and I''ve been waiting a long time for him to get his own Marvel Masterpieces card set again. Now the wait is finally over (after a few years of agonizing delays getting the set finished...) Simply put this book captures all the artwork from the card set (and more!) in a large format and is incredible from beginning to end. Each and every painting gets a 2 page spread, the right side is the full page image of the finished painting (with no writing or borders or anything to cover up the image which is how it should be done, other art books could learn from this) the left side shows various sketches, ideas, progressions, alterations, requested changes etc that lead to the finished piece, and has a blurb from Joe himself about his thought process designing the piece, his inspiration, his thoughts on the character, costumes, things like that, which I found to be extremely interesting! In these blurbs Joe mentions things like which cards he likes best (leaping Hulk in the desert, Rogue, Captain America with Dum Dum, Daredevil on gargoyle are some) his least favorites (Legion, Multiple Man, female Thor, anything Venom related, modern Iron Man...or anything Iron Man which he makes abundantly clear) Characters he knew nothing about (Female Captain Universe, Morlun, Gorr the God Butcher, Ultimate Spider-man) new age costumes he likes and doesn’t like (he likes X-visor Cyclops and modern Mystique, dislikes Hawkeyes, Luke Cage, Falcon, Iron Fist and Nova’s new costumes, dislikes Black Panther with a cape) versions of characters he enjoyed to do or would have rather done (he’s always wanted to paint the original green/white or red/black Captain Marvel and thus he didn''t want to do Carol Danvers Captain Marvel, he enjoyed doing "blue man" Dr.Strange over the classic Dr.Strange who he is not a big fan of, he really disliked the version of Star-Lord he ended up having to paint etc) concepts that he wanted to do that were rejected by Marvel (Frankenstein''s Monster with a film strip border - shown in the art book this way for the first time, Gwen Stacey done as a photograph to Peter, with a note from Gwen written on there to Peter - a note he had his wife write to emphasize the female hand writing) even some paintings that he felt he could have done better or would have changed if he had a second chance (Iceman, Blade, Black Widow, Spider-man VS Morlun, Thor VS Hercules) There are also several new paintings he did just for this book and other paintings he did for the card set which Marvel did not end up using and are printed in this book for the first time, including most importantly the Fantastic Four, which Joe (correctly) states no Marvel Masterpieces set is complete without Marvels first family! The list of the new paintings included in the art book but not printed in the card set are: Mr.Fantastic, The Thing, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, Firelord, Galactus, Valkyrie, Gladiator (buzz saw hands not Shi''ar) Madame Hydra, Ulik, Killraven, and Apocalypse VS Magneto. All in all this book is a must have for any Joe Jusko fan, Marvel fan, art book fan, or combination of any of these things! This is the perfect example of how to properly do an art book, the art is the star, its presented extremely well, no distractions, insights into the piece from the artist, and knowing the "behind the scenes" thoughts adds so many layers and interesting tidbits while looking at the art, very highly recommended!!!
